Prayer

God of infinite goodness,
throughout the ages you have remained faithful
in claiming and reclaiming your people.
Renew for us your call to repentance,
call us back home to your abiding love,
surround us with witnesses and friends to aid us in our journey,
and grant us the time to fashion our lives anew,
through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Scripture

Isaiah 55:1-9 (recommendation: have a little fun and read this in The Message translation if you have access to it)

Reflection & Discussion

The search for meaning and ongoing participation within God’s Story requires some detective work. We follow clues. We turn over stones. We search for what we believe will bring us ultimate meaning and participation. However, many times the clues we follow lead to an experience of emptiness or a path leading to nowhere even though we were determined there was something.

  • What are a couple of things you used to believe would bring meaning to your life and participation within God’s Story only to find they failed to do so and left you empty and/or still searching?

The prophet Isaiah reminds us of God’s faithful presence walking with us in life, aiding us in our search for the clues that lead to life’s meaning and participation in God’s Story. The love of God for us is faithful to the end. The prophet mentions water, food, wine and milk that satisfy and God offers it to his people so they will be sustained on the journey. Will we keep following the clues and discovering what God has for us?

  • What has God’s presence and love been revealing to you regarding the things in life that really bring significance and participation in God’s Story? What are one or two of those things you’re discovering?
  • On a scale of 1-10 (1-closed and 10-open), how closed/open are you to allowing God’s presence and love to keep leading you in discovering clues that lead to the water, food, wine and milk he has for you? Why did you choose the number you did?
